How to Delete a Messenger Account – More solutions to be taken into account

How to Delete a Messenger Account

If the deactivation of your Messenger account appears you to be too radical to be adopted, but you still want some peace of mind from all your chats notifications, you could always go for one of the following alternative solutions.

How to Delete a Messenger Account – Appear offline

How to Delete a Messenger Account

One of the first solutions to be adopted to not be bothered on Messenger is to appear offline. By preventing others from seeing when you have access to Messenger or not, you may discourage the usual “bores” to contact you all hours of the day and night.

To appear offline, and consequently not allowing others to see the little green ball next to your name, you have to run the Messenger app on your device and click on the bullet points at the bottom of the screen (this option has the name of “People” on iOS). In the screen that opens click on the tab “Active” and set on OFF the button near your name.

As you can clearly see, the little green ball that indicates the online status has disappeared from your name and for this very reason other users will not be able to see you when you’re online. In the spirit of fairness, you won’t either be able to see then other people are online, unless you restore again the setting you just modified by switching on ON the button near your name (always in the “Active” tab).

From PC, the procedure to follow to appear offline is as simple. To appear offline you have firstly to connect to the Facebook Messenger website, log in with your credentials and the click on “Login”. Once logged in, click on the gear symbol in the top left corner, click on Settings, switch on OFF the button near your name and click on “End”.

Even in this case the result is the same: other people won’t be able to see when you’re online, but either you, unless you restore again the setting you just modified by switching on ON the button near your name (always in Settings).

How to Delete a Messenger Account – Turn off notifications

How to Delete a Messenger Account

A much more effective solution than the previous mentioned is to turn off notifications from Messenger.

To temporarily disable notifications on your Android device, start the Messenger app, click on your photo, then on “Notifications and Sounds” and switch off the button near the heading Yes. In the box that appears on the screen, choose for how long you want to keep turned off the notifications and confirm the operation by clicking on the OK button.

To temporarily disable notifications on your iOS device, start the Messenger app, click on your photo, then on “Notifications and sound ” , next click onNotifications” and turn on the button near the heading “Do not disturb”. In the box that appears on screen, select one of the proposed options depending on how long you want your notifications to be turned off.

If you want to turn off permanently your notifications, you have to access to the settings of your Android/iOS device. To do this, head to Settings>Notifications (or Audio and Notifications)>Apps (or Notifications>App Notifications). In the screen that opens, click on the Messenger icon and turn on the button near the heading “Block All”. To restore the notifications you’ll just have to switch off the button, from the same screen.

To turn off permanently your Messenger notifications on iOS, go to Settings and then on Notifications>Messenger. You’ll just have to switch off the button near the heading “Allow notifications”. In case of take-backs, you can restore your notifications by switching on the button on the same screen.

How to Delete a Messenger Account – Disconnect from Messenger

Another solution you should consider is to disconnect from Messenger. Since the app of the namesake IM service does not include this option, you will need to “go through” the Facebook app or, if you have an Android device, delete all data of your app from your device’s settings.

To disconnect from Messenger on Android, start the Facebook app, click on the symbol (=) and select Account Settings (at the bottom of the screen)> Security and Login. Next you’ll need to go to the “Devices” section from which you’ve logged in, click on the active session on the Android device from which you logged in (or, alternatively, click on “Log out of all sessions” to close at once all the open sessions on all your devices), click on the symbol (…) and, in the menu that appears, click on “Exit”.

On the other hand, on iOS, you have to start the Facebook app, click on the symbol (=) and select Settings (at the bottom of the screen)> Account Settings. In the next screen click on “Security and Login”, head to the “Where you’re logged in” section, select the Messenger session you want to close, click on the symbol (…) and select “Exit” from the drop-down menu that appears on screen to close the sessions you are interested in. Instead, if you want to close all active sessions, click on “Log out of all sessions”.

Did you see? It was not so difficult to disconnect from Facebook Messenger. I told you, simpler than you ever could have imagined. Moreover, on Android you can go for another solution: delete all the app data from the Settings of your smartphone or tablet.

To do this, head to Settings>Apps>Messenger. In the screen that appears, click on Storage and then on “Delete Data” to delete all data related to your Messenger account stored in your device.
