Once you see the list of nearby networks, you can click on one of them to connect: if the network you are trying to hook to is free, and therefore is not protected by a password, you can immediately connect to it. If instead you want to connect to your home password protected Wi-Fi network, you will have to type in the password text field the key to access your Wi-Fi network.
