Tumblr is a social network and a microblogging platform that, similar to Instagram, focuses on visual content. Although it is a long-standing social network, Tumblr has been able to adapt to the trends of the Web and still remains a very used platform, frequented by a mainly young audience.
Born in 2007, acquired by Yahoo in 2013 and originally designed as a platform for the easy and immediate creation of a personal blog in which to write text content, insert links and write quotes, Tumblr then underwent several improvements in an attempt to keep up with times. Also available as an application for Android and iOS, Tumblr has now become a social network in which images, drawings and above all GIF, definitely go for the greater.
There is still the possibility to create a personal blog and to write their own thoughts in textual form, but we must specify that there is a clear difference between Tumblr blogs, called tumblelog, and classic blogs and / or websites.
Blogs on Tumblr have strong limitations in terms of personalization; on the other hand, you can easily integrate all the desired multimedia contents from Tumblr and other social networks. Tumblr is also characterized aesthetically by an atypical look that I would call a little retro. On balance, therefore, Tumblr is more like a social network in which the aim is to have a personal space in which to share multimedia elements of interest and, occasionally, write their own thoughts: a sort of evolution of the secret diary, in short .
In addition to being accessible from PC and Mac from desktop browsers by logging into your website, Tumblr is also available via apps for Android and iOS. To understand in detail the functioning of Tumblr you must first proceed by registering to the social network, being able to use all its features.
Go then on the official website of the social network and make a free registration by pressing the Start button that you find at the center of the Home Page. For registration purposes, fill out the form that is proposed to you by indicating your email address, password and the username you want to use and proceed by pressing the Register button. You will then have to indicate your age and perform the security check to finally complete the registration to Tumblr.
In case you have previously done registration on the social network, once you have connected to the official Tumblr website you will have to press the Enter button instead of the Start button.
At the first access to the social network you will be asked to choose at least 5 blogs to follow, choosing based on what are your interests. Then click on the thematic blogs presented and click on the Next button. To complete the verification of your account you will then have to click on the confirmation link that will have been sent to you by email.
Once logged in, you will first be able to view the Dashboard, the initial screen related to the flow of multimedia content posted by other users. Through this section you can then view the posts published by the blogs you follow and interact with them. Also through the dashboard you can also start to publish content on your blog.
There are in fact 7 types of posts that you can share on your blog created on Tumblr; you can see the tools for creating a post directly at the top of the Dashboard.

Through the Text button you can write a post on your Tumblr blog and format it aesthetically, using the Photo or Video button you can publish a multimedia content by uploading it from your computer or sharing it via its link on the Internet. Then there are the Quote and Chat button that allow you to write text content with a singular formatting, while the Link and Audio button respectively allow you to create a new post on your Tumblr blog by entering a URL or a music file.
As for the interaction with other users of Tumblr, through the Dashboard you can view all the content of users followed and suggested, alternatively, search for a desired content using the search engine located at the top.

Once you have identified a multimedia content that interests you, you will be able to interact in different ways. By clicking on the button the symbol of the paper airplane you can send to other users and via private message, the content of your interest. Then there is the symbol of a comic: by clicking on it you can comment on the element of your interest. If you click on the button with the two arrows symbol, you can use the reblog tool which allows you to share the item posted on your Tumblr blog. Finally, the most used interaction tool on Tumblr is the classic “Like”; corresponds to the symbol of the heart.

The other noteworthy features of Tumblr are visible by clicking on the buttons in the top bar of the social network. By clicking on the compass symbol you will be able to view another Tumblr section full of content posted by other users, similar to the Dashboard. Unlike the latter, however, it will be a view exclusively linked to the topics of tendency and related thematic content of greater prominence.
Also on Tumblr there are the messaging features of the most popular social networks: by clicking on the button with the envelope symbol you can send private messages to users. If you want to customize your blog more, before interacting with other users and posting content, I suggest you click on the button with the symbol of a little man and then click on your username.
You can access the Tumblr section exclusively dedicated to your blog and, in addition to having the tools for publishing content that I have already spoken to you, you can customize your blog aesthetically. To do so, then click on the Edit Graphic to modify some basic aesthetic elements of your Tumblelog.

As I explained to you in the introduction of my guide, Tumblr is available for use also through a free application for Android and iOS. You can take advantage of all the features that I talked about even by downloading the app on the mobile device that you usually use.
To start using Tumblr on Android and iOS, you must first download the application to your device’s memory. If you have a smartphone with Android operating system, you will have to go to the Google PlayStore (it’s the app with the symbol of a colored flag). Using the search engine located at the top, then type Tumblr and press the Search button on the smartphone keyboard. Once you have located the Tumblr application in the PlayStore, press the Install button and then the Accept button. At the end of the installation, press the Open button to start the application of this social network.
Do you have an iPhone and would like to know how to proceed to download the app? In this case you have to go to the App Store of iOS and through the search engine of the Apple virtual store, search for the application. Then type Tumblr in the search engine and confirm the desire to search the app by pressing the Search button from the keyboard. Once you have identified the app, on iOS you will have to install it by clicking on the button Get and then Install (or by pressing the finger on the Touch ID to install it, depending on the options you have activated on your device).
On both devices, to start using Tumblr you will need to log in with your account: press the Enter button and log in by entering your details. Once logged in, you will first be shown the Dashboard and you can interact with the posts you will see through the buttons of which I explained the features in the previous lines.
The application of Tumblr on Android and iOS has the same features as the desktop version accessible via the Web site. What changes is only the position of some buttons: to publish your blog’s multimedia elements you have to press on the button with the pencil symbol located down. It will then open a circular menu where you can see the buttons for sharing GIF, Link, Chat, Quote, Audio, Video, Text, which features are identical to the Web version of the social network.
